The importance of incorporating peace journalism into conflict reporting

By Lucas Marsh

Since the advent of photography, conflict reporting has played a crucial role in disseminating information about wars and civil unrest to the public. However, the manner in which journalists choose to present these stories, whether through the deliberate framing of photographs or the subconscious use of language, can potentially exacerbate tensions and lead to further violence. Thus, it is of utmost importance for conflict journalists to incorporate peace journalism practices into their work.

Peace journalism, unlike other disciplines of journalism, is not confined to a specific doctrine or medium. It is best understood as the active choice to mitigate the inflammatory nature of the content being reported. This is achieved through various methods, such as using neutral language, avoiding graphic descriptions of violence, providing background information on the conflict's origins, and carefully selecting visual images that minimize harm.

Contrary to its name, peace journalism is not exclusively linked to conflict reporting. Its principles can be integrated into various journalistic disciplines, including political, historical, and sports journalism. When covering any story with the potential to incite unrest or violence, peace journalism's elements can be applied to prevent the escalation of conflicts.

With ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia, coupled with the rise of online communication platforms, peace journalism has become increasingly vital. Reporting on conflict and violence can lead journalists, influenced by their emotions, to produce emotionally charged narratives. While this may be a natural response to witnessing such events, it can inadvertently contribute to the cycle of violence that prompted these situations. Just as stories of war and human suffering can affect journalists' emotions, the public can also be deeply impacted by media reports, potentially leading to retaliatory violence. Therefore, journalists must remain vigilant about the possible repercussions of their conflict coverage and strive to mitigate the inflammatory aspects of their reporting.

Other major factors and events defining the 21st century can also benefit from peace journalism. The way reporters frame stories about police brutality, gender-based violence, sexual harassment, and systemic racism can significantly impact local communities and the national conversation on these issues. It's often these small, widespread, and frequent acts of injustice and violence that have a larger impact than the most destructive aspects of war. To foster ongoing peace, peace journalism must become a fundamental part of professional discourse in newsrooms. Until peace journalism is fully integrated into journalistic practice, achieving lasting peace will remain a challenge.
